Michiel has long experience with audit and advisory for large, international oil & gas companies. He brings a strong technical capability and advisory knowledge, combined with a highly developed acuity to identify the issues most relevant to main industry players. As a result, he delivers strong, independent opinions from an informed perspective.

As Global Leader of one of KPMG's major international practices - Energy and Natural Resources - Michiel leads over 5,000 professionals based in all major cities across the globe and delivering audit, tax and advisory services to organisations in the Oil & Gas, Power & Utilities, Mining, Energy Services and Renewables industries. The Energy and Natural Resources Groups clients include major international accounts such as BHP Billiton, BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Petrobras, Royal Dutch Shell, Total and Woodside. The role has provided the opportunity for Michiel to continue to drive the development of KPMG's global Oil & Gas Centre of Excellence and Global Energy Institute - both of which set and continue to drive the highest standards of client service and thought leadership to representatives within the oil and gas and broader energy industry.

From 1999, Michiel has been Group audit engagement partner for Royal Dutch Shell. In 2002 he relocated to the United Kingdom in order to enhance KPMG’s service to Royal Dutch Shell from the London Practice. Michiel currently serves as Global Lead Partner for Royal Dutch Shell at Group and Business level and brings extensive knowledge about Shell’s local operations into the discussion. In his role as Global Lead Partner, Michiel has worked with management in most of Shell’s key locations.
Michiel is also the consulting partner for KPMG’s Repsol team, and he has assumed the role of relationship partner for Gazprom. In his role as Global Chairman, Michiel meets frequently with management of some of the largest companies in the energy and natural resources industry
